Story: Whanganui region

Pūtiki pā, about 1850

Pūtiki pā, about 1850

Pūtiki was slightly downstream and across the river from the Whanganui settlement. Its people had close economic links with the town, and a protective attitude towards it. In this romanticised image, artist John Gilfillan captures the economic exchanges and human interaction of daily life in the pā.
