In an effort to encourage people to immigrate, New Zealand Company publications described their new towns in the most glowing terms. Paintings were a powerful way of conveying this message. Here, New Plymouth is depicted as an idyllic town within a tamed rural landscape. The snow-capped Mt Taranaki in the background adds a hint of majesty to the scene. New immigrants often found life radically different once they arrived.
