In 1882 the Dunedin left Port Chalmers for London, carrying the first cargo of frozen meat and the first small shipment of butter. The attempt to carry easily spoiled goods in a new way was not without incident. The cold air ducts which maintained the refrigeration became blocked by ice. In order to clear them, the captain crawled down and chipped the ice away.
