This 1885 painting shows an idealised image of a Māori pā, which includes a wharenui (meeting house), a pātaka (food store) and whare. To the left there appears to be a rangatira speaking to an assembled group. In traditional times all knowledge was transferred orally, and there are examples of tohunga (experts) who had extraordinary recall.
