The paddle steamer Koheroa was one of three gunboats to serve on the Waikato River during the Waikato war. This watercolour shows her discharging troops at Pukerimu (Cambridge) in April 1864. The war began the previous year with an invasion of Waikato by troops under General Duncan Cameron. Most Māori, and some Europeans including several members of Parliament, regarded this action as a breach of the promises contained in the Treaty of Waitangi.
