Naturalisation (later grant of citizenship) ceremonies, at which new citizens publicly declare their allegiance to New Zealand, are hosted by local mayors and usually held in council chambers. Individuals from a variety of countries step forward to take their oath. The ceremonies are conducted with a dignity befitting the importance of the occasion for those taking part. This is a programme for a typical ceremony held in the Lower Hutt Council Chambers in April 1967. (Programme courtesy of the Lower Hutt City Council)
