In 2013, 23% of Pacific people aged over 15 smoked tobacco regularly – 8% above the national average. The proportion of smokers varied between different ethnic groups: the heaviest smokers were Tokelauans (32%) and the lightest Fijians (13%). Smoking increases the risk of cancer and heart disease. Groups such as Smokefree ran courses to help Pacific people to quit the habit.
