This chart shows monarchs (in bold) and royal visits to New Zealand up to 2011. First on the list is George III, in whose name Captain James Cook claimed New Zealand. The first royal visit did not take place until a century later. The most frequent royal visitor has been the Duke of Edinburgh, who has been to New Zealand 15 times. Royal visits often include work for organisations with which the visitor is associated, such as Riding for the Disabled or the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
