Mokotahi Hill, on the north side of Māhia Peninsula on the east coast of the North Island, is an example of private land gifted to the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust to ensure its permanent protection. Centuries ago Ruawharo, an important ancestor of the local tribe Rongomaiwahine, lived on the hill in a pā called Tirotiro-kauika.
