From the late 1960s protest marchers adopted the masks, costumes and antics of Mardi Gras parades and protested their causes through street theatre. It was an effective way of attracting public and (especially) media attention. This masked troupe leads an anti-Springbok-tour street march in May 1981. The central figure is a caricature of Prime Minister Robert Muldoon.
