Story: Department stores and shopping malls

The Warehouse

The Warehouse

The Warehouse in Palmerston North was one of 85 stores – from Kaitāia to Invercargill – in the chain in 2009. The large discount stores have some characteristics of department stores, including the variety of goods for sale, organised into departments. However, the ‘red sheds’ are straightforwardly commercial compared with the deliberately luxurious feel of the department store – as shown by the famous slogan ‘where everyone gets a bargain’. The Warehouse often became an anchor store in shopping malls.
