Rural schoolchildren

Rural schoolchildren

The many small rural schools in New Zealand face unique problems to do with their size and isolation. One of these is the issue of transporting children to and from school, often considerable distances. Once the Ministry of Education financed transport for these schools, but now schools with a small roll are responsible for providing their own bus service. In 2000 the teacher and children of Whareorino School near Te Kuiti drew attention to this issue and were given $18,000 from Pub Charity Incorporated to purchase a replacement for their old bus. They are shown here with the new bus.
