A relaxed group of young Māori soldiers prepares to leave New Zealand about 1916, as reinforcements for the Pioneer Battalion. Other Māori had earlier served in the Gallipoli Campaign as a Māori Contingent. This was later reformed into a Pioneer Battalion which dug trenches and made roads on the Western Front. In 1917 the battalion became an all-Māori unit.
