The media amplifies community concerns on certain issues – some criminal, others merely antisocial or unhealthy. Teenage binge drinking is one example. Students at the University of Otago drink beer from a bong – a funnel and pipe combination that uses gravity to force the beer into your stomach when you suck on it. Binge drinking has been tolerated and even celebrated in New Zealand culture, but attitudes are changing as people become more aware of the social costs.
