Story: Child abuse

Speaking out

Speaking out

Tremain Mikaere grew up with a violent father and was himself violent towards his children and wife. He spent time in prison and was a gang member. After meeting a man who became his mentor, he completed anger-management programmes, learned te reo Māori and rebuilt his relationship with his family. Mikaere helped other adults to become free of violence, and shared his life story in It's time we started telling these stories, a book published by the Ministry for Social Development.
