Said to be the most massive slip in the southern hemisphere, the 40-hectare Tarndale slip in Mangatū played its part in promoting the afforestation of the Mangatū Block as a way of preventing further such occurrences. At one point the slip occupied almost the entire valley; by the time of this photo (2000) some of it had been reclaimed by forest.
