In August 2010 New Zealand's newly appointed ambassador to the US, Mike Moore (right), presented his credentials to US President Barack Obama at the Oval Office, Washington. Moore was not a career diplomat, but a former politician who had been prime minister of New Zealand in 1990. The post of ambassador to the US has traditionally, but not always, been a political appointment. After Moore retired due to ill health in 2015, he was succeeded by former cabinet minister Tim Groser.
