Wellington-born businessman, charity fund-raiser and rugby league fanatic Sir Peter Charles Leitch, also known as The Mad Butcher, has been honoured twice. He received the Queen’s Service Medal in 1991 for community service, celebrated in this photograph. In June 2010 he was made a knight companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and philanthropy. Interviewed at the time, Leitch said his knighthood was not just for him but also for everyone who supported him. He wasn’t planning to make much use of the title. ‘Mate, mate, don’t be stupid. Do you think I have me head up me arse, mate? I won’t be using it, it’s just there.’ ('Butcher knight still everybody's mate', Stuff, http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/queens-birthday-honours/3782849/Butcher-knight-still-everybodys-mate (last accessed 8 December 2011))
