Cliff Robinson (centre), his daughter Marita and son Johnny are pictured here after the Court of Appeal's decision on family care for disabled relatives, in May 2012. Cliff has been the caregiver for Marita and Johnny, who are both disabled. The Ministry of Health had appealed against earlier Human Rights Review Tribunal and High Court decisions that it was discriminatory for the ministry not to pay family members looking after disabled relatives. The Court of Appeal upheld the decisions of the tribunal and High Court. These decisions were made under legislation designed to provide better protection of human rights, as agreed to under various United Nations conventions signed by New Zealand.
