Restaurants aimed at families and casual diners opened in New Zealand in the 1970s. New Zealand Breweries opened the first Cobb & Co restaurant at the South Pacific Hotel in Auckland in 1974 and by 1980 there were 27 throughout the country, mainly located in motor inns or hotels.
