One of the greatest of the Māori showbands was the Howard Morrison Quartet, featuring (from left) Morrison, Noel Kingi, Gerry Merito and Wi Wharekura. The band appeared on New Zealand television in its earliest years, an achievement that made the cover of the Māori Affairs Department magazine Te Ao Hou in 1962. Their act combined close-harmony singing with stand-up comedy routines, and parodies of popular songs.
