Wiremu (Bill) Parker (Ngāti Porou) was a noted orator in both Māori and English. He became the first Māori radio news announcer in 1943, and continued to deliver radio and television broadcasts until his death in 1986. Parker taught Māori studies at Victoria University of Wellington from 1965 until the early 1980s. He also contributed to numerous publications such as the Dictionary of the Maori language (also known as the Ngata dictionary).
