This area is a stronghold of the Ngāti Hei people, who are descendants of Hei, Tamatekapua’s uncle. In the early 2000s the Ngāti Hei Trust Board represented some 350 people, the sole survivors of the 23 hapu (sub-tribes) that once occupied the area. The Ngāti Hei tribe was decimated by musket-wielding Ngāpuhi war parties that swept through the area in the early 1800s.
