Members of the Australian Sesquicentennial Gift Trust, including Chief Historian Jock Phillips (left), Tamati Reedy (second from left), chair Judith Binney (third from right), Judith Fyfe (second from right) and Ata Malifa (right) meet with the Australian High Commissioner (third from left) in 1990. That year the Australian government gave a sesquicentennial gift to New Zealand of $1 million to support oral history. It was used to establish the Awards in Oral History scheme, which was administered by the Historical Branch and subsequently the History Group. The awards encouraged and supported a range of oral history projects each year.
