This rock art is in Takiroa, near Duntroon in North Otago. The natural limestone shelter lies on a historic pathway for Ngāi Tahu people, following the Waitaki River from the mountains to the sea. Under its overhang are images in charcoal and red ochre – birds, animals, people, mythological creatures and abstract forms. They are thought to date from about 1400.
