Chiefs of Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Ngāti Whātua

Chiefs of Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Ngāti Whātua

This group portrait of the 1840s shows Mananui Te Heuheu Tūkino and his younger brother Iwikau (left and second from left), chiefs in a Ngāti Tūwharetoa leadership dynasty that continues in the 21st century. Second from right and right are Ngāti Whātua chief Āpihai Te Kawau and his nephew Orakai. The fine cloaks worn by all these men are one indication of their high rank.
