In 2009 thousands of people marched down Auckland's Queen Street, protesting against a government decision to reject a royal commission's proposal for three Māori seats on the newly created Auckland 'super city' council. Instead, the government chose to establish a Māori statutory board to advise the new council on Māori issues.
