This television news clip shows the 1997 protest by Taranaki dairy farmers against statutory rent increases for the land they leased from the Crown. The farmers drove their tractors to Parliament to object to paying greatly increased rents for their perpetual leases on land confiscated from Māori in the 19th century. In 1998 the government passed the Maori Reserved Land Amendment Act, setting market rents for the land and giving greater control to the original Māori owners.
