Local political comedy took some years to be established on New Zealand television. A week of it was the first really successful satire series. David McPhail, Chris McVeigh and Jon Gadsby, seen in a skit at the Gluepot Tavern, were among the writers and performers. Others included A. K. Grant, Bruce Ansley, Peter Hawes and Annie Whittle. The phrase heard in this clip, 'Jeez Wayne', entered the national vocabulary. A week of it ran from 1977 to 1979 and was consistently irreverent and up-to-the-minute. This clip is from the Christmas special in 1979.
