Story: Hotels and motels

Auckland hotels, 1844

Hotels were part of the built landscape in New Zealand towns from the start. This sketch of Auckland in 1844 shows four hotels (highlighted) scattered across the young settlement. The Royal Hotel – at the top of the sketch (number 19) – was Auckland’s first. It is next to Government House, which may be why it hosted an extravagant dinner for Governor William Hobson.
