Kehu, the Māori guide for Thomas Brunner in his explorations on the West Coast, skillfully captures a weka in his tari (slip-noose on a rod). Kehu holds a stick with feathers attached and imitates a bird call to entice the weka into the noose. Māori were expert fowlers as birds were such an important food source.
