Zoom in on this 1869 Defence Office map to view details of the main areas of land confiscated from Māori (shown inside the blue boundary lines) after the New Zealand wars of the 1860s. Smaller parcels of land outside the blue lines were also confiscated. The Native Land Court was given special powers to investigate the land claims of Māori who had taken part in the wars. Many of the subsequent confiscations were later found to be unjustified. Some confiscated land was returned, but not always to the right owners.
