More than 60 of the most influential Māori in the upper North Island attended the Young Māori Leaders Conference at the University of Auckland in September 1959. It recalled an earlier and equally significant conference held there 20 years earlier. The 1959 conference president was A. T. Carroll and the organising secretary was Matiu Te Hau. Among other key figures in this photograph are Te Kapunga (Koro) Dewes, the Reverend Whakahuihui Vercoe, Īhakara (Kara) Puketapu, Kāterina Mataira, Harry Dansey, Pat Hōhepa, Merimeri Penfold and Pei Te Hurinui Jones.
