Feast celebrating treaty signing, 1840

Feast celebrating treaty signing, 1840

This drawing, by missionary Richard Taylor, shows the feast to celebrate the second treaty-signing ceremony, at Hōreke, south Hokianga, on 13 February 1840. The signing was held on the property of the shipbuilder Thomas McDonnell. Cannon overlook the harbour, in which many waka (canoes) can be seen. A large crowd is gathered at left, under several Union Jack flags.
