These red cod (Pseudophycis bachus) were caught in Lyttelton Harbour. The species is found only in New Zealand and southern Australia. It is more common around the South Island, especially along the east coast, and is usually found in depths of 100–300 metres. They use a sensory barbel on their lower jaws to detect prey in mud or sand. Red cod are caught commercially, but are not that popular with recreational anglers as they are poor fighters. The flesh is soft, white and moist.
