Deep warming of the Tasman Sea occurred between 1996 and 2002: this profile of water temperatures at different depths shows that waters around 250−300 metres increased in temperature by about 1°C. (This general trend occurred down to depths of 800 metres.) Years with warmer waters coincided with a failure of young hoki to survive into adulthood.
