This figure shows the maximum known diving depths for New Zealand’s seals in comparison with humans and sperm whales, as well as the maximum time spent underwater per dive. Deeper dives have been recorded for New Zealand fur seals than for other fur seal species, and New Zealand sea lions also apparently dive deeper than other sea lions. Southern elephant seals sometimes sleep under water.
