Hēnare Tōmoana

Ka mea a Hēnare Tomoana ki a Te Wiremu (Atirikona Hamuera Wiremu): ‘Ki te morehu kaumātua o Heretaunga, ka karanga au ki a koutou – engari kua pahemo koutou katoa, ā, kua toe mai ko koe. Pupū ake te ngākau i te aroha. Engari au i te kaumātua, heoi nā te rironga o ō mātou kaumātua kua kīa mai ahau he kaumātua. I meatia ahau kia ako i te iwi, ā, ko te tūmanako ka ara te tētē kura o te iwi Māori otirā mō tēnei reanga; kua tutuki taku wawata i te rangi nei. E tika ana kia aratakina te hunga rangatahi e ngā kaumātua ki te ara tika, e tū rangatira ai rātou. Engari me ngāwari mātou. Nā mātou nā ngā kaumātua tonu i whakataha mai. Kaua mātou e whakarērea. Ā te wā mā koutou hei whakakī ngā tūranga nei, e hiki ai te mana inā kaumātua ai koutou. Tēnā koutou' ('He kupu whakamarama', Te Pipiwharauroa, Hui-tanguru 1902, p. 3).
