Provincial voting paper

A voting paper for the election of the superintendent of Auckland in 1855. This voter, William Cains, a trader, cast his vote for Frederick Whitaker. Whitaker failed to win the position but went on to win the superintendency in 1865. He was also briefly the colony's premier (1863–64) and served several stints as attorney general.
