Number of letters carried, 1844–2005

Apart from a short, sharp dip during the Second World War, the number of letters carried by the New Zealand postal service increased fairly steadily from its beginnings in the early 19th century. The slight drop since around 2000 is likely to reflect the growing use of email rather than post for sending personal messages.
