In comparison with men, numbers of women in Parliament remained very low until the 1980s. The women's movement led to an increase, and after the introduction of mixed-member proportional representation (MMP) in 1996, female representation grew significantly. The 2017 election saw 46 women elected, making up 38% of Parliament.
