Numbers of women MPs

In comparison with men, numbers of women in Parliament remained very low until the 1980s. The women's movement led to an increase, and after the introduction of mixed-member proportional representation (MMP) in 1996, female representation grew significantly. The 2017 election saw 46 women elected, making up 38% of Parliament.
