Brothers Pene and Amitai Paki and cousin Moses Mackay formed Sol3 Mio in 2012. The three Samoan New Zealanders had won awards in New Zealand and Australia, and intended to study at the prestigious International Academy of Voice in Wales. Sol3 Mio was a fund raiser for study in Wales, but its mix of opera and popular music proved so successful – their first, self-titled album was New Zealand’s best-selling album of 2013 – that the trio continued to perform together.
