Kōrero: Kauri forest

Kauri 2000

Kauri 2000

Former Governor-General Dame Catherine Tizard (left) was patron of Kauri 2000, a millennium project. Its aim is to plant kauri seedlings on the Coromandel Peninsula, once dominated by kauri forest. Intensive logging in the 19th and early 20th centuries decimated most of the forest, and Kauri 2000 hopes to restore the forest on publicly owned land. Here, Dame Catherine plants the 20,000th seedling for the project in 2006.
