South Canterbury’s climate – a relatively moist growing season followed by a long, dry summer – is well suited to wine growing. The first commercial winery in the region was Ōpihi Vineyard, near Pleasant Point. The vineyard includes Clifton Cottage, built by Edward Dark of Glentanner Station near Aoraki/Mt Cook. Constructed from local limestone, with 45-centimetre-thick walls, the cottage is now the winery’s café.
