As a young man, Mohi Te Atahikoia was successful in securing title to ancestral land through the Native Land Court, but became increasingly concerned about the alienation and leasing of Maori land in Hawke's Bay. This led on to his involvement with Te Kotahitanga, the Maori Parliament.
