D. A. Jolly (second from right), owner and manager of this general store in Pembroke (now Wānaka), Central Otago, stands with his staff (who may be his sons). Mr Jolly first arrived in New Zealand in 1862 to work as a gold miner. He later opened a general store in Cromwell, and then this branch at Pembroke. His change of occupation reflects the trend in the New Zealand economy from extracting natural resources to providing services.
