This photo of the Norton brothers, Marlborough whalers, with their clubbed seals was taken about 1913, long after the main period of sealing in New Zealand (the first three decades of the 19th century). The scene of mass slaughter was typical of the earlier period. The quarrying of natural resources was a major characteristic of the New Zealand economy in the first century of European settlement.
