Alternative lifestyle: Wholemeal Café notice board

The notice board at the entrance to the Wholemeal Café in Tākaka advertises yoga, meditation retreats, dance workshops and HANDS (How About No Dollar System) – a bartering system where people can exchange goods or services. In a small community like Tākaka where there are not many jobs, many people are self-employed and try to carve out some sort of living that allows them to stay in Golden Bay. Many have sacrificed higher incomes for relaxing lifestyles.
