Nelson Football Club, 1873

The Nelson Football Club poses for a photograph in 1873, around the time of their game against the Wellington Football Club. The first interclub fixture under rugby rules in New Zealand was held at the Botanical Reserve in Nelson on Saturday 14 May 1870, when the Nelson Football Club played Nelson College. That day the Nelson Club won by two goals to nil (at the time 'touchdowns' were not worth any points and only afforded the chance to kick at goal).
