Returning to New Zealand from England in September 1963, Janet Frame visited family and friends in Auckland, then went to Ōamaru to help settle the estate of her father, who had died in August. While there she was interviewed by a journalist from the Oamaru Mail, and an article was published with this photograph, taken in the Ōamaru Public Gardens.
